The Kitchen Became a Classroom — and Magic Happened

In every class at Palmetto Kids Cooking, we made kids-menu favorites with real ingredients.

We talked openly about food, health, flavor, and how the body uses what we eat.
We studied ingredient labels and learned about ingredients we could not pronounce.

Kids in my classes asked thoughtful questions like:

  • “Why is sugar in fruit different from sugar in candy?”
  • “Can food really be addicting?”
  • “Why do companies put colors in foods that don’t need it?”

And parents were stunned — truly stunned — when their “picky eaters” proudly shared green smoothies or vegetables after just one class.

Fun and delicious bunny-shaped pancakes with strawberries and bananas. Perfect for kids' breakfast.

Creating Change

At first, before I started my business, I had no idea I was meant to teach kids to cook – I didn’t know I was going to become a business owner either.

Then one day, I read an article in the New England Journal of Medicine that shook me to my core. One sentence stayed with me:
…the youth of today may, on average, live less healthy and possibly even shorter lives than their parents.”
Full article: A Potential Decline in Life Expectancy in the United States in the 21st Century

The reason? Some would say childhood obesity. Some would say the chemicals, food dyes and a host of other factors that our kids are eating today.

That article broke something wide open in me.
It was all I could think about.
How did we get here?
And more importantly… what could be done?

As I dug deeper, the truth became painfully clear:
Kids are surrounded by unhealthy choices everywhere — in commercials, in grocery stores, in school cafeterias, and even in homes trying their best.

Brightly colored boxes at eye-level in the grocery stores.
Blue applesauce. Have you ever seen a blue apple in nature?
Snack foods engineered to be addictive.
Families overwhelmed by marketing and convenience.

I knew I had to help kids see what real food was — and discover that healthy food can taste really good.

So I made a decision:

I would open the eyes of the kids. I would be the walking -talking commercial for real food – healthy food – and we would have fun.

No shame.
No diets.
No pressure.

Just hands-on cooking, real ingredients, real skills, and real conversations.
